From Trash to Treasure

By Thaddeus Feiler
One company is making it their business to see that the world is a little greener. A company called TerraCycle Inc. is taking discarded packaging, such as juice pouches, bottles, corks and much more discarded waste, and turning it back into functional packaging and trendy accessories. Who would have thought that a shiny juice pouch could be used to make a stylish bag durable enough for everyday use, or that an old soda bottle could be used as a vessel for various new products such as TerraCycle’s deer repellent.

As a member in the packaging world, I am delighted to see that the unrecyclable packages are no longer just being thrown out, but being made into functional new ways to not only help mother earth, but also the packaging industry. With some effort and time, I think that all of the packaging in the world could be recycled or reused in some way, whether it be to make a bag or use old wine corks to make a “Waste Cork Corkboard”. As packaging develops in the world around us, there is no end to the possibilities as to what can be created out of one person’s trash. With all the packaging engineers coming out of school with a minor in sustainability, there are going to be many new ideas on how to reduce waste and increase the value of a discarded package. Packaging Sustainability is there; we just have to find the possibilities.
